Obituary

Georgia (Vander Weit) Jonkman, of Richmond, Virginia, entered her eternal rest during the early hours of May 1st, 2025. She joyfully celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends in January 2025.

Georgia was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 20, 1925. She will be remembered for her love of family and her many creative gifts, all inspired by her faith in her loving Savior. Her values were also formed by being the youngest of ten children during the Depression - she told many stories from this time in her life. Her parents were both born in Friesland, Netherlands, and she delighted in her Dutch-Friesian heritage. Many of her often-stated Friesian proverbs live on with her children, perhaps none more so than "Saying it isn't doing it."

Georgia described herself as a "domestic engineer," raising her children with her husband Chris, whom she married on September 20, 1946. She undertook everything with passion, whether gardening, restoring furniture, writing poetry, singing, making beautiful quilts, hosting backyard tea parties, and so much more. After her husband's death, Georgia volunteered at Ingalls Memorial Hospital for several years.

Georgia was preceded in death by her cherished husband Christopher John Jonkman, her daughter Christine, and her son Jacob (Jack). She is survived by children Joan Bisset (Steve), Grace Spreacker, Pearl Jonkman-Hujet (John), Crystal Jonkman (Anthony Creech), and daughter-in-law Phyllis Jonkman. She treasured her nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Georgia moved to Westminster Canterbury Richmond in 2011. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to the Westminster Canterbury Foundation. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 9, 2025, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lansing, Illinois, with reception following. A memorial service will take place in Richmond, Virginia, at a later date.

Blileys Funeral Home in Richmond, VA was entrusted with Georgia's arrangements and transportion to Lansing.
