Elmo Eugene "Gene" Anderson, age 93, of Dyer, IN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 18, 2021. Gene was born on 10/3/1927 in Preston, Mo. He graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Mo. On 12/23/1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Malone. Gene served on the USS Pocono in WWII and on the USS Haven during the Korean Conflict. He received his Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Missouri after returning from Korea. He worked for Standard Oil of Indiana-Amoco Oil from 1954-1990.
Gene was a resident of Dyer since 1956. He was one of the first Police Commissioners for the Town of Dyer and served on the Dyer Zoning Board. He was a Little League coach and a member of the Dyer Lions for 50 years. He has been a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church since 1954. He was an amazing father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His family would like to extend a special thank you to his loving family of caregivers at Residence at Deer Creek who took excellent care of him in his final years.
He is survived by two sons, Michael (Linda) Anderson of Lansing, MI and Jerry Anderson of St. Charles, MO; one daughter Kimberly (Larry) Frank of Dyer, IN. Grandchildren T.J. (Katherine) Weigel, Daniel Weigel, Katie (Brandon) Chynoweth, Sadie Anderson and Macy Anderson. Great-Grandchildren Kayla (Chris) , Alexus, Broden, Olivia, Skyler, Teddi, Milly and Russell Eugene. Great-Great Grandchildren Raylie and Waylon. Siblings Elizabeth Howard, Bob Anderson and Kaye Thomas. Sister-in-laws Marjorie McClain and Katie Anderson. Family by choice Kiki and Wayne Hartman, Sandy Cheek and John Brooks. Many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Dorothy, his parents Alva Granvel (Jake) and Mary Cela Anderson and siblings George Anderson, Betty Ackels, Billy Anderson and Ronald Anderson.
Private funeral services will be held at St. Paul Episcopal Church, Munster, IN. Friends may visit with the family at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd, Lansing IL, from 2:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday April 24, 2021. Committal Services will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery, Springfield, MO.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Episcopal Church, 1101 Park Dr., Munster, IN 46321 and/or EDNIN Youth Camp, 117 N. Lafayette Blvd, South Bend, IN 46601.
