Alice Leila Charleston (nee Hoster) of Merrillville, IN, formerly of Lansing, IL, passed away on January 8th at the age of 87. She is survived by her children: Margaret Shear, Ken Charleston (Shantel Lemonier), Debra Lange (Robert Lange), and Lynn King, as well as her beloved grandchildren Nicholas Charleston, Trent Stemp (Ariel Burgess), and Kristin Shear. Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years Kenneth Charleston, brother William Hoster, sister Judy Morris, parents Beatrice and Leopold Hoster, and her beloved grandson Thomas M. King.
Alice worked in various clerical positions throughout her career and retired in 2001 from American Correspondence School in Lansing, IL. She loved to travel and spent several years traveling with her husband Ken after retirement, and later with her children and grandchildren. Alice enjoyed creative hobbies and was a skilled baker, cook, quilter, and crafter. She loved to share those gifts with all who'd accept them.
Alice was a devout Catholic and a member of the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Merrillville for many years. She was a woman of incredible faith which brought her immense joy and peace. Alice was beloved by many friends throughout her lifetime and was known as an amazing woman with an incredibly kind heart. Alice lived each day to the fullest and showed a kindness and love towards her family and friends that will never be forgotten. Alice will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Friends are invited to visit with Alice's family on Saturday, January 24 from 9:00 – 10:00 AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish, 8303 W. Taft St., Merrillville, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in honor of Alice to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Unity Hospice and Palliative Care of Merrillville, IN.
